Aosta Photo Mountain Festival Agoust 2008
“Open your mountains” … Images and Protagonists of the New Photography event
On Friday 22 August 2008 the Mountain Photo Festival was inaugurated in Aosta, curated by Alessandro Ottenga with the artistic direction of Lorenzo Merlo in collaboration with the Contrasto Agency (Milan) and realized thanks to the Department of Tourism and the Department of Education. and Culture of the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta and the Municipality of Aosta.
The festival has as its general objective the inclusion of Aosta in an international network of cultural events linked by the guiding thread of the Mountain. “The spirit of the Mountain Photo Festival can be summed up in the slogan ‘Open your mountains’ – explains Alessandro Ottenga – a sort of invitation to confrontation, dialogue and cultural exchange, with the aim of starting a path of artistic reflection on the themes of current affairs involving mountain areas around the world “.
Between the 22nd of August and the 21st of September Aosta experienced a month of great exhibitions accompanied by moments of meeting with the authors, presentations, workshops, artistic and cultural animation and theme nights.
The exhibition program included anthological exhibitions by authors including: Chris Steele Perkins, Marc Riboud, John Vink, Prabuddha Das Gupta… in a socio-cultural journey dedicated to the mountains of the world, their people and their cultures.
Following the example of consecrated festivals such as Arles and Perpignan, the city of Aosta and; was conceived as an “open” museum, in which the culture of the image is offered to the citizen and the visitor in combination with the archaeological and monumental heritage of the city. The exhibition itinerary involved some of the main historical-archaeological sites of Aosta, from the Praetorian Doors to the Paleochristian Basilica of San Lorenzo; from the Cathedral to the Roman Villa della Consolata .. revealing the consistency, the value and the extraordinary state of conservation of the cultural heritage of the Valle d’Aosta capital.
