This exhibition had received the patronage of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, of the Ministero dei Beni e delle Attivita’ Culturali e del Turismo Italiano and of the French National Commission for UNESCO, of the Universita’ Ca’Foscari Venezia – Dipartimento di Studi sull’Asia e sull’Africa Mediterranea »

The Exhibition will travel from April to June 2017 at the

Museo Orientale in Venice (Italy)

in the Pesaro Palace on the Grand Canal, and at the end of the year at the

Museum of the Bernard and Caroline de Watteville Foundation, in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

A bilingual catalog will be published on this occasion.

A first guided tour will take place on January 13 at 3 pm.

On 18 January at 3 pm, Amina Taha Hussein Okada, Curator-in-Chief of the Indian Arts Section of the Guimet Museum, will present a conference on the theme.

The gallery exhibits various masks from West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, Karnataka, and also from Bhutan and New Guinea. terracotta mask of Bakasura from Bihar; chhau mask of Lord Ganesha; Narasimha Satriya mask of Assam

Les préoccupations de l’homme sont depuis la nuit des temps universellement les mêmes; la vie et ses mystères avec son lot de vicissitudes propre à la condition humaine comme à tout être vivant.
Se dressent en toile de fond de primordiales interrogations: d’où venons-nous, où allons-nous, quel est le sens de tout cela, et pourquoi? Demeure surtout en suspens la question de que ce qui se passe ensuite…
Les sociétés “primitives” ont échafaudé des éléments de réponses avec le monde des esprits de la Nature, le culte des ancêtres, la vénération due aux divinités, aux idoles, dont ont découlé une multitude de croyances en un au-delà qui a essaimé de par le globe en se déclinant selon des rituels propres à chaque culture.
Comment en effet conjurer les sorts, se protéger de la funeste adversité, des démons qui provoquent maladies, épidémies, sécheresses, famines, guerres et autres calamités?
Nous avons eu l’idée de mettre en scène ces thèmes avec une sélection d’objets illustrant celle d’un animisme universel.
Cet ensemble d’artefacts d’origines aussi éloignées que celles de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et de l’Himalaya rayonne de l’aura d’une singulière cohérence dès qu’ils se retrouvent en présence, placés en vis à vis.
Mais c’est sans se départir de ces concepts théoriques qu’il faudrait pour autant occulter la dimension artistique de ces pièces et faire l’impasse sur l’imaginaire via son accès à une sphère qui relève du magique avec sa merveilleuse propension à nous faire durablement rêver.
Nous vous invitons à venir découvrir cette exposition et d’en débattre; vous serez les bienvenus.

On the left (below) an interesting dark patina mask with a characteristic hooked nose. On the right a pair of masks danced in pairs, with a very expressive look, come from the same village and from the same hand.

A TRADITIONAL HOUSE OF THE SWAT VALLEY OF NORTH PAKISTAN

Houses in the Swat valley used to be built from
wood earth and stones. Nowadays concrete has
replaced the wood.

In the  North of Pakistan the houses are on the
slopes in the valleys. Natural stone and wood
were the most important building materials.
The wood has now been replaced by concrete.
The wooden chairs racks cupboards and boxes
are decorated with carving in which curls and
floral patterns dominate.
