MASK OF THE DAY

A

Ritual Mask

Gourd & Metal

Odisha 20th century

Kuttia Kond Masks such as this is used as substitutes for human skulls at the annual or triennial sacrifice (Meriah) to Dharni Pinnu, the Earth Mother.

They are made of gourds, decorated with red and white beads.

Although a Kond Mask is associated with the tradition of Meriah (human) sacrifice but after this practice was stopped in the middle of the 19th century, the Konds preserved many relics related to this practice.

The community believed that such relics had divine sanction.

Many preserved the old knives, iron chains and bowls which were used in the rites; some were able to preserve bits of human flesh in bamboo tubes; others, more lucky, cherished human skulls.

The term gombe means a wooden doll. These are usually huge in size and at times can be as tall as 12 feet and are very heavy in weight. Such dolls are primarily used in Karnataka in folk dances during major festivals. The dancers don these dolls during their performances. While the dolls used during such performances are made with bamboo sticks and paper mache, they are no less in weight. (Text credit Mata India)
