AN EXPLICATED ICONOGRAPHY

The ‘Knot’ on the top could simply mean that the masks reproduces the ‘typical’ hairstyle of the Humla area – see in particular the Bhotia man wearing his bound -up (on the left and center) and the similar picture on the right .

Sort of portraits of the locals, sometimes quite realistic.

A group of masks from Robert Brundage photo archive collection offer us the possibility to make some iconographic notations.

The masks of group “A” belong to the well-documented, iconographically, group of traditional Mani masks of the Nying-ba area. The masks of group” C”, on the other hand, could be an iconographic derivation / degeneration of these – or, conversely, their iconographic starting point. Coming from the same area, they could both be relevant theories.
